Provided by AGPKhashoggi, a 59-year-old Washington Post columnist, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul during a visit in 2018. His body is believed to have been dismembered and has never been recovered.
Saudi authorities have acknowledged that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate but maintain that the operation was carried out by rogue officials acting without approval from the country’s leadership.
In July 2022, Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN)—an organization previously associated with Khashoggi—and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) filed a legal complaint alleging complicity in torture and enforced disappearance as part of an organized group. The complaint accused Mohammed bin Salman of ordering “the murder by asphyxiation” of Khashoggi.
According to reports, the new French investigation follows these legal proceedings and related accusations.
