France Pushes Back Against Trump's Overflight Assertions

(MENAFN) The French presidency pushed back Tuesday against assertions made by U.S. President Donald Trump, clarifying that Paris has not altered its longstanding policy on American military aircraft transiting French airspace, local media reported.

The dispute was ignited by a post Trump published on his social media platform Truth Social, in which he accused France of blocking U.S. military planes — carrying supplies bound for Israel — from crossing French territory. Trump branded the country "very unhelpful" and issued a pointed warning that the United States would "remember."

The Élysée Palace moved swiftly to counter that characterization, reaffirming that its position has remained consistent throughout the duration of the conflict. "We confirm this decision, which is consistent with France's stance since the beginning of the conflict," it said, as reported by French media.

The French military had already laid out the contours of its policy as recently as March 5 — allowing U.S. aircraft uninvolved in operations against Iran access to select French military installations, on the strict condition that such aircraft serve only to support the defense of regional partners and play no role in American operations against Tehran.

France has been an outspoken critic of the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, formally characterizing the operations as "outside international law" and making clear they fall beyond the bounds of what Paris is willing to endorse.

The public exchange marks a fresh point of friction between two longstanding NATO allies, as disagreements over the Iran conflict continue to strain transatlantic relations.
