First Round of France’s 2026 Municipal Elections Concludes

(MENAFN) Voting ended on Sunday in the opening round of France’s 2026 municipal elections, according to a daily newspaper.

The report noted that more than 48 million citizens throughout over 34,000 municipalities participated in the vote, selecting local councils and mayors who will serve six-year mandates.

In Paris, preliminary projections indicated that Emmanuel Grégoire, a Socialist and former First Deputy Mayor under Anne Hidalgo from 2018 to 2024, was ahead with 36.5 % of ballots cast. The same report stated that he was followed by Hidalgo’s longstanding conservative opponent Rachida Dati with 24.9 %, while radical-left contender Sophia Chikirou secured 13.7 %.

Meanwhile, in Marseille, early forecasts suggested a tight race between the incumbent left-leaning mayor Benoît Payan and far-right National Rally legislator Franck Allisio, with both drawing 35.4 % of the vote. Independent right-wing candidate Martine Vassal followed behind with 12.3 %.

Across France, individuals seeking seats on municipal councils run as part of electoral lists submitted by various political parties and coalitions.

Under the country’s local election system, a list that obtains 50 % of the vote in the first round is declared the victor. Should no list achieve this threshold, those gaining at least 10 % of the ballots in the initial round advance to compete again in a second round.

Following the second round, mayors are chosen by the elected council members during the inaugural meeting of the newly formed municipal council.
