France Refuses to Approve US-Israeli Strikes on Iran
Speaking on France 2, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot criticized the operations, saying they lack clear strategic goals and do not meet international legal standards. He emphasized that France is not participating in the conflict.
“We do not approve of this war, and we are not participating in it,” Barrot said, calling for urgent measures to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
The minister also urged Iran to alter its regional approach, stating, “We expect Iran to renounce being a destabilizing and dangerous power.” He added that Tehran must undertake “a radical change of posture and major concessions” to create conditions for a lasting resolution in the region.
Barrot noted that several nations have expressed interest in joining an international defensive mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a proposal recently highlighted by French President Emmanuel Macron. He mentioned that potential participants include both European countries and nations within the region.
The regional situation escalated after Israel and the US launched a joint attack against Iran on Feb. 28, reportedly killing more than 1,200 people and injuring 10,000 in what the US termed “Operation Epic Fury.” Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
