France Expected to Hold General Election
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has directed Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to begin logistical preparations for a possible nationwide vote, potentially synchronized with municipal elections slated for March 15-22.
The contingency planning follows the submission of no-confidence motions by opposition forces, notably France Unbowed (LFI) and the National Rally, targeting Lecornu's administration.
Should these measures succeed in parliament, the National Assembly would face dissolution, automatically triggering an early electoral contest.
Mathilde Panot, Deputy Group Chair of LFI, launched a scathing attack on the current leadership, asserting that France had been humiliated internationally and demanding the immediate departure of both Lecornu and President Emmanuel Macron.
The nation has endured persistent governmental volatility in recent years.
Former Prime Minister Michel Barnier's administration crumbled in December 2024, while Francois Bayrou's government disintegrated just last September.
