Paris court finds ten people guilty of cyber-harassing Macron’s wife
The Macrons have long been targeted by conspiracy theories alleging Brigitte Macron’s transgender identity. In 2024, a Paris court fined the originators of similar claims a total of €14,000 ($15,000). The case gained international attention after US commentator Candace Owens amplified the allegations last year and later claimed that the Macrons had ordered her assassination.
Under the recent ruling, the defendants, aged 41 to 65, received varying sentences ranging from mandatory courses on online hate speech to suspended prison terms of four to eight months. One defendant received a six-month prison sentence for failing to appear in court.
The court highlighted that the comments circulated online were “particularly degrading, insulting and malicious,” involving false claims about the first lady’s alleged transgender status and distorted allegations of pedophilia linked to the couple’s 24-year age difference.
Emmanuel Macron, 48, and Brigitte Macron, 72, who met when she was his drama teacher, have long been subject to public scrutiny. In recent years, they have begun taking legal action to challenge the spread of false and malicious online claims.
