France to sue e-commerce platforms over sale of sex dolls

(MENAFN) French authorities plan to file a formal complaint against two major e-commerce platforms for selling sex dolls, the country’s Commerce Minister Serge Papin announced Wednesday.

Speaking to a national broadcaster, Papin said the government will pursue legal action against AliExpress and Joom, accusing the platforms of distributing “pedopornographic dolls.” Earlier in November, reports were already submitted to judicial authorities regarding these sites, as well as eBay, Temu, and Wish, for offering illegal products.

Separately, a court hearing is underway in Paris concerning the potential suspension of the Asian retailer Shein, following a referral to the judiciary earlier in November over the sale of childlike sexualized dolls and prohibited weapons. Authorities are expected to seek at least a three-month suspension.

Papin emphasized the need to “put an end to the digital Wild West” and highlighted the importance of verifying that returned products meet consumer safety standards. He also called for coordinated action on this issue at the European level.
