French Strike Disrupts Flights at Paris Airports
(MENAFN) The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) has called on airlines to cancel 40% of flights at Paris airports on Thursday due to a strike by air traffic controllers. The work stoppage is already causing severe disruptions in southern France as the summer school holidays approach.
The strike’s impact is not confined to Paris. According to the DGAC, multiple cities across France are experiencing significant air traffic delays, including Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Ajaccio, and Figari.
In Nice, France’s third-largest airport, half of all flights will be grounded due to the strike.
To mitigate the impact of controller shortages, the DGAC has ordered a 30% reduction in flight operations at several airports, including Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Ajaccio, and Figari.
"Despite preventive measures, significant disruptions and delays are expected nationwide," the DGAC cautioned, attributing these issues to ongoing understaffing of air traffic controllers, which continues to hamper operations.
The strike is organized by France's second-largest union, UNSA-ICNA, along with the third-largest union, USAC-CGT, following unsuccessful talks over working conditions. The unions are protesting chronic understaffing, mismanaged technical projects, and what they describe as "toxic management" within the DGAC. However, the largest union, SNCTA, opted not to participate in the strike.
